Characteristics of an Extraordinary Military Spouse
Aug 07, 2024In a recent blog (24 July) I paid tribute to a lady I refer to as the ‘epitome of an extraordinary military wife’: Nancy Spencer Mathis. The key question is: What qualities did Nancy consistently demonstrate throughout her service as a military spouse to rate the category “extraordinary”?
The spouse’s role is multifaceted, requiring a unique combination of personal strengths and qualities to navigate the complexities and challenges that come with being married to a military service member. The attributes of great military wives blend resilience, adaptability, supportiveness, independence, and understanding. Let’s examine the key characteristics that define a great military spouse:

- Patience: Understanding that plans often change and being able to adapt without undue stress or frustration.
Adaptability
- Flexibility: Being able to quickly adjust to new environments, cultures, and communities with each relocation.
- Resourcefulness: Finding ways to make new places feel like home, seeking out local resources, and creating a stable environment for the family.
Support
- Emotional Support: Providing unwavering emotional support to their spouse, especially during times of separation and stress.
- Encouragement: Motivating and encouraging their spouse, boosting their morale, and being their biggest cheerleader.

- Career and Personal Development: Pursuing personal goals and career aspirations, while maintaining a sense of individuality and purpose.
Understanding

Community Engagement

Parenting and Family Management

Personal Well-Being
- Self-Care: Prioritizing their own mental and physical health, recognizing the importance of self-care in being able to support their family effectively.
- Support Systems: Seeking and maintaining a support system of friends, family, and professional resources to manage stress and emotional well-being.
Loyalty and Commitment
- Dedication: Demonstrating unwavering loyalty and commitment to their spouse, the family, and the military lifestyle.
- Sacrifice: Understanding and accepting the sacrifices required, including personal time, career opportunities, and physical proximity to friends and extended family.
- This role demands a remarkable blend of qualities, making these women pillars of support and resilience within the military community.
In essence, the epitome of a great military spouse is someone who can balance strength and vulnerability, independence and togetherness, and personal aspirations with immediate and extended family commitments. At the end of the day, resilience is the most outstanding characteristic of a military wife. This quality encompasses the emotional strength and adaptability required to face the unique and often unpredictable challenges inherent in a military lifestyle.
